Inflight dating… what next?

Monday, December 28th, 2009

it’s that time of the decade when we look back at the past 10 years and compile lists. I thought that it could be a good idea to wrap up the Naughties with a nostalgic look at international relationships.

I was discussing a number of Turnleft iphone apps with Peter Robinett (you should check Coffeeshoppr on your next trip to Amsterdam) when he forwarded a link to Bluenity, the social networking site set up by Air France KLM. According to the disclaimer Bluenity is a community site for travelers, enabling members to communicate at the airport, during the flight and at the destination. Now call me a cynic but I know a hook-up site when I see one and inflight flirting is one hell of a concept considering that WiFi will be on board most aircrafts over the next few years – in fact Turnleft had been entertaining the idea for a while (but restricted to the most Orthodox followers of our radical chic, Dries Van Noten trenchcoat & 4 am Currywurst dianetics)…

In what seems like a distant prehistoric past, foreign brides were ordered by post. So after a good look at Bluenity I gave the concept a serious thumbs up and could only marvel at how far meet (meat?) markets have gone over the past ten years, to the point where an airline feels compelled to launch its own mile-high club and to allow seat 10C to flirt with 19E on the Amsterdam-Sydney (or even better to let them sit together).

Unless you’ve been on the other side of the moon (or married) dating fads cross the Atlantic and the Channel at the speed of light, uniting Paris/London/New York singletons through speed dating, boardgame dating, 7 to 1’s, silent dating, dating dans le noir, lock & key parties and red-amber-green stickers (shag tags really). That was until the Internet decimated all forms of social interaction. Then all conversations shifted to Match.com, Meetic, Gaydar, Asians4Asians or Totally Jewish profiles. Recent revolution came in the form of Grindr which, according to my iphone, signals that based on GPS triangulation [name withdrawn] is 127 meters away and ready to chat. Grindr nickname: the gay sat nav. Bluenity is obviously the next best thing for international romance – the Friendsreunited of the 2010s for the global generation: you can be on your way to a Ny-Lon relationship on Friday night and have a side fling by the time you’ve landed at JFK.

And just when I was about to wrap up this post on a high note, a Turnleft follower is dumped by her Swedish beau. By SMS. 100 characters tops. Just before Christmas (“hello [name withdrawn]. i have had feelings for someone and thought it wasn’t mutual. i was wrong. sorry. take care”). That’s one sms to frame and it strikes me that the paradigm shift in the Naughties wasn’t so much with dating but with the art of dumping. If for the previous generation a break-up over the phone would have been a breach of manners, a landmark moment was reached in the 1990s when a LA actor dumped his French actress girlfriend by fax – saving himself the hassle of a first-class flight to Paris. It’s been downhill since and there’s something almost romantic about Carrie Bradshaw being dumped with a post-it note. Now a phone call or a fax would seem courteous compared to a Facebook message (I’m guilty as charged), a late-night status update (you know who you are) or a misspelt sms.

So back to Air France KLM’s Bluenity, well done. And hello Seat 5A on the AF003 to JFK. You look good and I have just finished Wallpaper*. Free seat next to me. U up 4 121 NSA? Bring drinks. Bluenity status: offline. Twitter: omg seat 5a is fit lol. Facebook message: hi [name withdrawn] i’ve just met someone on the AF003. sorry. take care.

A message from the Center for Responsible Hydration…

Monday, October 5th, 2009

I still don’t know what to make of Coca Cola’s claim that VitaminWater is bottled at its center for responsible hydration but the guys know how to turn spring water with added vitamin and pantone colouring into a fashion accessory. VitaminWater was launched in Brussels last week and the campaign included a 10-day pop-up shop Rue Antoine Dansaert (where else? incidentally in lieu of the street’s best design shop) and various events aimed at associating the brand with famous belgians – or that’s what the model-slash-barman behind the counter told us when we returned for more free bottles. Yes a high-ranking member of Turnleft indulged in a few plastic bottles but guiltily, wondering where it all started (probably when a Hollywood celeb decided to rinse her hair with Evian) and what will come next to keep us away from tap water…

Thankfully a few days later in London I found out that designer David Harber had just installed a public fountain in Hyde Park – courtesy of Thames Water – with the aim of sinking this unsustainable fad.

#20 Turnleft on the beach!

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

Our picture of the week – the Brussels campaign is well under way around Europe and copies can be found in the least expected locations. Last weekend we asked Goorilo – our street marketers in Barcelona – to distribute copies on the beach. Here is a snapshot of our new friends enjoying a good look at our poster at San Sebastian. If you happen to be at Barcelona’s Mar Bella this Saturday (8 August) we will be here again handing out more copies. The best picture will be posted next week!

#19 Aperos Urbains

Friday, July 17th, 2009

I’m a big fan of Aperos Urbains – Friday night garden parties. It starts around 5pm and it’s a great way to start the weekend. It’s quite stylish but not too pretentious, the outdoor locations are always amazing and the crowd is more local (and not too Eurotrash) – it beats Place du Luxembourg hands down. Tonight (17 July) for the first time, drinks will take place in Bois de la Cambre, Chemin du Croquet in front of Jeux d’Hiver.

Aperos Urbains has been around for 5 years and a big birthday bash will take place Monday 20 July at the Atomium – it starts at 16:30 and it will go on until 3am.

#18 100 Sexes d’Artistes

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

A tribute to Brussels’ tolerant ways… this exhibition was turned down by the Venice Biennale. Belgian artist Jacques Charlier exhibits 100 posters depicting the imaginary sexual organs of international artists. No censorship here – the mayor also insisted to display 25 posters throughout the city until 22 November!

#16 Bitchy Butch

Monday, July 13th, 2009

Bitchy Butch was on last weekend – we didn’t make it (the weather was nice and the pavement at Belgica felt like a better option) but it reminded me how great Brussels is for going out. It’s difficult to describe Bitchy Butch – but here’s their spiel:

” BITCHY BUTCH is a party which, like a jovial and alternative mishmash, brings together: modern pop (indie, electro, europop, chanson, disco, schlager, …) kinky and urban videos, outlandish deco, kisses, kisses, beer, drunkenness, trash and kisses. A mixed queer, festive and altogether a different night out in Brussels.”
Which reminds me – Los Ninos is on next weekend…

#15 Fritkots (chip shops)

Sunday, July 12th, 2009

Frites (chips) are a staple diet in Brussels and I’ve become obsessed with the wide choice of mayos, Sauce Andalouse is perfect – I’ve eaten the odd kebab frites smothered in sauce andalouse after too many drinks at 5am and I almost ordered frites & feta cheese (!) at the local Greek grocery store. Here are my top choices (and an extract of our Brussels zine featuring Tanguy and Charles)…

Friterie de la Barriere - 5 avenue du Parc (Saint-Gilles): 5am heaven

Fritkot Flagey - Eglise Sainte-Croix, Place Flagey (Ixelles): 3pm heaven

Fritland – 49 rue Henri Maus (Centre)

Friterie Tabora – 2 rue de Tabora (Centre)

L’Express – 8 rue des Chapeliers (Centre) (pitta)

#14 Vincent Delbrouck

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

Vincent Delbrouck is the Brussels-based photographer who did our 2 photo shoots. His no-nonsense documentary style is really is tune with the Turnleft spirit. Vincent – aka V.D. (no joke intended) – is also doing all the lookbooks and photo shoots for Brussels fashion label Girls From Omsk (see a previous post) – which came handy because we love GFO and designer Valeria Siniouchkina did all our Brussels styling. I don’t want to sound too dithyrambic so the best thing I can do is to attach 2 images (a rare occurence) and to suggest Vincent’s group show at the Musee de la Photographie in Charleroi.
